    Current Runway Information as of 6-3-26

    Airport Identifier
    • The correct Airport name is Flying Pear Ranch - 62CL.  Foreflight, AirNav, etc. all have the correct name.
    • We are working with CalTrans Aero to have the name "Flying V Ranch" updated on the FAA Charts.
    • Shadow Mountain Airstrip is permanently closed.

    Communications
    • No CTAF exists on the field.
    • Recommend monitoring Tehachapi (KTSP CTAF 123.00), Kern Valley (L05 CTAF 122.8) and Sierra Backcountry (122.85).
    • Informal Flying Pear Ranch CTAF is 122.80.

    Approach and Traffic Pattern
    • TRAFFIC PATTERN
      • Left traffic for both Runways 7 and 25.
      • Traffic pattern altitude is 4300 ft.  Surrounding mountains are much, much higher.
      • Don't overfly close to the neighbor's houses / animals and create a problem.
      • Don't fly low over Rankin Ranch.  They have horses.
      • Windsock is located on the Northeast side of the runway, mounted to the second pump house.
      • Always be aware of unusual winds created by abrupt terrain including mountain wave downdrafts and rotors.
    • APPROACH
      • Approach from the South (Tehachapi) 1000 ft AGL minimum over the ridge, just East of Rankin Ranch (not directly over the ranch and horses.)  Enter into left downwind for Runway 25.  Check the windsock.
      • Approach from the West (Bakersfield) 1000 ft AGL minimum up through drainage, just West of Rankin Ranch (not directly over the ranch and horses.)  Enter into left downwind for Runway 25.  Check the windsock.
      • Approach from the North (Kern Valley) 1000 ft AGL minimum, down through drainage, over Havilah.  Enter into crosswind, then left downwind for Runway 25.  Check the windsock.
      • Approach from the East (Inyokern, Walker Pass, Kelso Valley, and Twin Oaks) 1000 ft AGL minimum, down through drainage, over Twin Oaks.  Enter into Runway 7 downwind. Check the windsock.

    Landing and Take-off Recommendations
    • Windsock is located on the Northeast side of the runway, mounted to the second pump house.
    • LANDING - Runway 7 and 24
      • IMPORTANT:  The runway is rougher with soft sand on the first 1000 ft West side.  Not recommended for smaller nose wheel aircraft.
      • Runways do not have runway numbers.
      • Land on the Eastern portion of the runway which is about 2500 ft long.
      • When landing to the East, touch down past the twin Cessna on the neighbors property.
      • When landing to the West, touch down just past the "R".
      • When landing to the West, there are electrical and telephone wires between poles on the approach path to avoid on the neighboring property to the East.
      • The runway is wide, but stay inline with the obvious center of the runway for maximum safety.
      • Calm landing is typically landing uphill to the East and downhill take-offs to the West.
      • Land early in the day when there is less wind.
      • There are no Threshold Markings yet.
    • TAKE-OFFS
      • The runway has a slight downward slope to the West.
      • Consider leaning for maximum performance.
      • The wind is typically from the West so take-offs are downhill.
      • Be careful of taking off to the East due to uphill runway slope and rising terrain.
      • Easiest departure is to the West, down the drainage to Bakersfield.  Stay at least 1000 ft above Rankin Ranch!

    • There are no services at the airport.
      • No Water
      • No Fuel
      • No Cell Service
      • No Transportation
    • There are no weather observations available.
      • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LAND UNLESS ALL SURROUNDING TERRAIN IS VISIBLE.
      • Walker Basin is surrounded by Mountains and requires complete visibility of all terrain.
      • Check Tehachapi (KTSP AWOS 120.025) and Kern Valley Weather online.
      • Open an AWN account and look for Caliente Weather Station.
      • Open Alert California app and look at two Breckenridge Ridge webcams to view current cloud conditions.  They don't come up in the Search so you have to search "Walker Basin" and look just to the West, Breckenridge Mountain.
